A fine settimana ricominciano i negoziati sul clima

by

WWF foresees this first meeting of the UNFCCC in 2010 to address the following:

-         Ensure a strong plan and mandate for the two Ad-hoc Working Groups of the Kyoto Protocol and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and their Chairs to put the UNFCCC process on track and restore trust between governments to forge ahead.

-         Governments commit to adopting operational decisions on key climate issues in Mexico that enable their swift implementation such as frameworks for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), adaptation, finance, technology, as well as define systems for measurement, reporting and verification, based on the agreements from Copenhagen.

-           Governments should acknowledge that there is a considerable gap between     proposed emission reduction pledges and that there needs to be a process to address this failing.   Various studies conclude that global emissions need to be at 44 gigatons of CO2e, or lower, by 2020 if the world is to have a better than 50% chance of staying below 2 °C warming.  In 2005, global emissions already stood at around 45 gigatons, and they have been rising steeply since then. The emission reduction pledges by countries are all too low.

-         Governments need to have a debate on what the agenda and timeline should be for concluding on the overall comprehensive legal agreement to be finalized soon after Cancun, and for agreeing to a 2nd Commitment Period of the Kyoto Protocol
